Pink jungle safari first birthday cake smash
I was delighted to see this family again for their little girls first birthday cake smash, the brief was jungle animals I incorporated jungle animals onto print outs to make this beautiful fun safari backdrop. We took extended family photographs first before the cake smash and then a splash in the rolltop bath to clean up. Such a gorgeous family. And this little ones smile is the cutest!
Bespoke cake smash photography in Essex
I truly love these milestone sessions for babies and children, this little person you’ve nurtured for a year is becoming a toddler or nearing school age and these sessions are a brilliant way to capture that cheeky grin, their disgust at being covered in gooey cake, or splashing their heart out in the mini rolltop bath. I know everyone does cake smashes these days, but I didn’t want to offer a bit of bunting and maybe a balloon. I love creating a set that is themed to your child. Cake smash photography sessions don’t last long usually 45 minutes to about an hour and I’m fantastic at knowing when we have enough of the before photos (where your child is nice and clean in their clothes just sitting in the set, these sessions are sets not just a backdrop). We then move onto them being dressed in their outfit if they’re wearing something to match the set, I have actually started making costumes for the cake smash sessions now. The Snow White outfit I created as I wanted something that looked like a real Snow White would wear. We slide in the cake and record all their funny faces from first take of that yummy cake, fruit or pasta, and then after a few minutes when we know they’ve had enough cake, I bring in the rolltop bath for splashing fun and clean up time. I just can’t tell you how much fun these sessions are and truly special way to mark that milestone moment in your childs life.
This beautiful simple cake smash just concentrates of similar colour tones with just a row of balloons behind the birthday child. It really makes the child pop as it’s all about the cake and smashing the cake. He was just so super smiley!
Our latest cake smash is themed to – You’re my sun, moon and stars, and was designed in soft pastels rainbow colours, With the word ONE in watercolour wood effect rainbow shades with the sun moon and stars on them. Fluff for clouds and fairy lights with the backdrop a rainbow and cloud underneath a watercolour sun, moon and shooting stars. One year around the sun themed backdrop, this beautiful little one had her cake smash to match her nursery styling with boho suns in gorgeous warm colours, such a vibrant cake smash, loved the jewel colours.
I’ve been photographing this little boy since he was newborn, this years birthday theme was farm animals. And a really great way to get little ones interested is incorporating a ride on toy and making the photoshoot fun if they’re a little reluctant.

Each cake smash is bespoke and tailored to your tastes
I try to create something unique for each client by using your favourite colours, your childs favourite characters or your favourites from years ago. Cake smashes actually take a while to set up, blowing up balloons, creating cut outs of characters, sticking them to foam board, and putting the set together with props or whatever we decide upon. It’s a really magical experience for your child and such a memorable way to remember their first birthday.
A cake smash is a celebration of your baby or child’s milestones. They are usually taken for a first birthday or second birthday and I theme all my cake smashes to the parents taste. It doesn’t have to include cake, it could involve fruit, pasta or something else entirely and really you can have any type of cake smash photoshoot. If you love Harry Potter or Disney, or you or your family have a hobby it really is easy to style your special photoshoot to make it the best cake smash to reflect your interest and record your babies precious first birthday.
A few photos are taken at the beginning in the child’s own outfit, they are then changed into the cake smash outfit and presented with a cake, it is worth giving your child a super gooey cupcake a good couple of weeks in advance so they are used to and know they are allowed to get messy. The session is finished with a splash in the rolltop bath. Such a fun and special way to mark your child’s first, second or third birthday.
